Why Elementary School Counselors

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS’ DEVELOPMENTAL NEEDS
The elementary years are a time when students begin to develop their academic self-concept and feelings of competence and confidence as learners. They are beginning to develop decision-making, communication and life skills, as well as character values. It is also a time when students develop and acquire attitudes toward school, self, peers, social groups and family.

MEETING THE NEED
Elementary school counselors are educators uniquely trained in child development, learning strategies, self management and social skills, who understand and promote success for today’s diverse students. They implement a school counseling program to support students through this important developmental period. The program provides education, prevention and intervention activities, which are integrated into all aspects of children’s lives. The program teaches knowledge, attitudes and skills students need to acquire in academic, career and social/emotional development, which serve as the foundation for future success.

Nuts & Bolts of BES School Counseling

Classroom Lessons & Programs
All students will receive bi-weekly developmentally appropriate lessons focusing on researched based Mindsets and Behaviors.
In Kindergarten these are the building blocks students require in the following areas:  knowledge, attitude and skills they need to achieve academic success, college and career readiness and social/emotional development

School-wide programs focusing on those areas will also be implemented.

Small Group
Students who may need additional support may be referred for a small group. Parents, teachers or school wide data may suggest a student would benefit from these skills based groups. Parent permission will be required for students to participate. Small groups usually meet weekly for 30 minutes 6-8 weeks. If you think your child might benefit, contact me so we can further discuss.

Individual
As school counselors, we are trained to work with all students. If data supports a students needs for additional support, the school counselor may provide short term one on one interventions. Due to our role, we do not provide long term counseling but can be instrumental in offering support with referrals.
